Marketing

Pulse marketing information can be difficult for producers to track down. The Alberta Pulse Growers and Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development are partnering up to provide three sources of information on factors influencing dry pea, lentil chickpea and dry bean markets.

The first resource available to producers is, Pulse Market Insight, a newsletter written by Chuck Penner of LeftField Commodity Research. This bi-weekly commentary provides producers with independent insight and analysis for Canadian pulse crop markets. Based on international information sources, it helps producers understand important market forces and provides producers with solid market insight.  The Pulse Market Insight is sponsored by Growing Forward, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative.

Secondly, producers can hear bi-weekly interviews with Chuck Penner every second Wednesday on Call of the Land. “Pulse producers are looking for pulse marketing information” says Gerry Good, Chair of the Alberta Pulse Growers. “This multi-media approach will allow producers to access market research at their computers or combines”.

A long running, but under-subscribed resource, is the Feed Pea Benchmark. This tool provides producers who are marketing feed peas a pricing reference. This benchmark provides a consistent and unbiased estimate of the feeding value of peas based on the value of competing feed ingredients in swine rations.
