Pulse production helps the agriculture sector deliver environmental benefits to Canadians. Crops that fix nitrogen can help reduce CO2 emissions from agriculture and can act as a cornerstone of the bio-fuel economy by playing an important role as part of a sustainable crop rotation for bio-fuel crops including cereals and oilseeds. Moreover, crops that require less fertilizer help to lower input costs for farmers. The Alberta Pulse Growers Commission, together with Pulse Canada, is working toward a strategy that will position Canada's pulse industry in a leadership role in environmental stewardship for Canada's agriculture sector.
Alberta Pulse Growers, Alberta Barley Commission, Alberta Canola Producers Commission, and the Alberta Crop Industry Development Fund also jointly fund the Crop Sector Working Group (CSWG). The CSWG was created as part of the 2007 Alberta Crop Environmental Strategy to provide a means to manage policy issues in the areas of water, wetlands, land use, climate change, research, and stewardship. The CSWG is an inclusive partnership of Alberta crop sector organizations committed to addressing and aligning agriculture and environmental policies and priorities in the province.
